Creative Community Engagement

S.O.W. aims to close the opportunity gap for NYC youth to realize a diverse, impactful creative sector by providing access to pre-professional development resources, real world work experience and holistic mentorship through site visits, shadow opportunities and master classes.
Target Creative Sectors:
DESIGN
FASHION
MEDIA
FILM
MUSIC
ADVERTISING & MARKETING
S.O.W. Site Visits match groups of young people with industry partners to pull back the societal curtain that systematically prohibits NYC youth to see themselves in creative careers. Getting access to the creative industry in real time humanizes the people and spaces that are creating the brands and products young people are consuming. S.O.W. Site Visits provide youth with the opportunity to see themselves in positions as the creators of culture and not just consumers.
The S.O.W. Shadow Day is a curated 1-on-1 experience that pairs one S.O.W. student with one industry partner for a full work day. This experience affords the young person an all access pass to the day in the life of a NYC creative professional. This real-world experience provides youth with a deep dive into the career path of the partner, and nurtures the start to an on-going mentorship relationships between S.O.W. students and industry partners.
S.O.W. Master Classes are skill sharing sessions lead by industry partners. These classes allow NYC’s young people to learn directly from leaders in the creative industry in an attempt to disrupt higher education, specifically the barriers youth face in access to NYC’s elite art and design schools. Industry Partners co-facilitate alongside S.O.W. staff in various competencies:

  • Culture
  • Design Thinking
  • Project Management
  • Marketing and Branding
  • Creative technical skills
